Solar Fiesta 2003 Some 20 hours of workshops will be held on Solar PV for remote sites and grid-tied households throughout the weekend of September 20 and 21 at the IPCC. A special 3 hour workshop will be hosted by Dankoff Solar and Southwest Windpower on small wind systems. With 450 watt wind generators retailing at less than $700, this technology is now an affordable and practical choice for home electrical generation. Workshops can assist homeowners in retrofitting their existing home or in designing a new one with low energy bills and minimum impact on the environment. Experts in solar water pumping, rammed earth, adobe, and straw bale building will share their many years of experience in New Mexico. This year Kids Korner, sponsored by APS, will host a series of fun and educational workshops for kids of all ages. The Explora program from the Children's Museum of Albuquerque, the "Up and Atom" presentation of the National Atomic Museum, PNM, NMSEA, and the NM Museum of Natural History and Science will join the Talking Talons show featuring hawks, owls, bats from 11-5 daily in the "Big Top". The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center's Children's Museum will be in open house during the same hours. Vegetarian green chile stew and portobello mushroom sandwiches will be served in the afternoon, and the restaurant at the IPCC will offer 10% entree discounts to fairgoers. Sponsors including PNM, the Energy Conservation and Management Division of the NM EMNRD, BP Solar and many others have ensured that the 2003 Solar Fiesta has much to offer everyone! For the first time ever, teachers, firefighters with I.D. and kids under 12 are admitted free. A workshop schedule will be posted on the nmsea.org website after September 1. For further information contact NMSEA at that site or call 505-246-0400. Americanos: Latino Life in the United States Americanos: Latino Life in the United States (La vida de los latinos en los Estados Unidos). Americanos a major photographic exhibition will come to the Bond House in Española as part of a nationwide tour. Americanos presents an intimate portrait of Latino communities across the country through the work of 30 prize-winning photojournalists. The exhibition presents 120 photographs by thirty of the nation's top photojournalists. The exhibition offers, through the information technology medium of photography, an extraordinary view of the breadth and variety of the Latino experience, encompassing the spectra of national origin, economic status, education, profession, religion, and language.
The exhibition made its debut in 1999 at the
Smithsonians National Museum of American History. The
Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Services
(SITES) and the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives
have organized Americanos, a project of Olmos
Productions, Inc. Activist/actor Edward James Olmos collaborated with photographer Manny Monterrey. Americanos is the centerpiece of a multimedia program that includes a large-format book published by Little, Brown & Company, an HBO documentary, and a music CD released by Atlantic Records. This comprehensive approach to presenting the subject of Latino contributions to the United States has singled Americanos out as a fresh, dynamic museum-going experience. This project proposes to
introduce "learning in a museum" to Northern
New Mexico. "Museums and galleries at their finest
are universal educational institutions of immense power
and authority. They communicate with us across boundaries
of language, culture and time
" A Common
Wealth, David Anderson, 1997. The power of museums and exhibitions like Americanos can disseminate information about our community and our world to inspire students and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and tolerance. The goals of this exhibition are: · To introduce the Bond House (in Española) to current and future patrons of museums; · To enhance the delivery of services of the Bond House; · Increase awareness of the Bond House and maximize exposure of local artists; · To enhance the curricula of schools in Northern New Mexico by providing an environment to encourage and develop arts and history literacy; · To make interpretative materials available prior to students arrival; ·
To contribute to a museum-challenged region with an
exciting open-ended learning experience; ·
To provide museum access to individuals who would not
otherwise participate and; ·
Finally, to give students and their families an
opportunity to take part in an informal learning
experience in a relaxed environment. Studies show learning
in a museum has an impact on a students
overall achievement in school. The traditional education
system tends to isolate the learner from social
interactions for example; the lack of access to the
alternative medium of learning in a museum
results in deficient arts and history literacy while in
contrast, progressive education recognizes the social
aspect of learning. Therefore, it is the intent of this
project to have every student in Río Arriba County, who
is in the sixth grade to twelfth grade, view this
exhibit. This will be achieved by partnering with Río
Arriba County (RAC), school boards throughout RAC, the
City of Española, and the Pueblos of Santa Clara and San
Juan to provide transportation to the exhibit. The City of Española and
Information Technologies Across Cultures, Inc. (ITAC) are
proud to present Americanos. ITAC was organized in May
2000 to develop and implement the Citys public
access channel. ITAC's mission is to Build
Community Through Communication™". Diamond
