Retrograde.. the backwards messenger
What does it mean when a planet is in retrograde?
Mercury Retrograde periods:
Start 2 Jan 03
End 22 Jan 03 in Capricorn
Start 26 Apr 03
Ends 20 May 03 in Taurus
From the earth, if we look up in the sky and watch the
motion of the planets against the backdrop of the stars,
we usually observe them moving in one direction.
Occasionally, every celestial body except the Sun and the
Moon will appear to slow down in its orbit, stop, and
then go backwards, or retrograde, for a period of time.
Mercury is in retrograde motion for three weeks, every
four months.
Mercury is the planet of communications and details,
among other things.
Since Mercury is the planet that governs our thinking and
understanding, astrologers watch Mercury for good times
to:
* contact people
* make important decisions
* buy mechanical equipment
* sign contracts
What happens when Mercury is retrograde?
Conditions dealing with thinking, communication, travel,
details, machines, pets, siblings, neighbors, and the
written word (all Mercury-ruled energies) are altered and
do not function as expected in the outer world. This
affects everyone, regardless of sun sign.
Retrogrades are times when a planet's energy is
redirected inward, so the whole world experiences it on a
more internal level.
For example, Mercury retrograde is the classic time for
machines to screw up.
* The fax machine malfunctions
* your e-mails don't go through
* your computer has a problem
* your car goes kaput.
All this forces you to go inward and find creative
solutions. This is not the best time to buy any
electronic or mechanical equipment, particularly a car.
Mercury also governs speech and communications.
* misunderstandings and miscommunications are common
* delays and crossed wires
Generally things don't go exactly as planned. It's a wise
strategy to leave some extra room in your schedule during
this period to allow for the unexpected, especially when
traveling. Also, read the fine print before you sign any
contract or make any important deal, as people are prone
to overlooking details.
Constructive use of Mercury retrograde
Remember, retrograde means backwards. This is a time when
we are called upon to go back and take care of unfinished
business.
* rework things you started in the past
* possible to regain contact with someone from the past
* review, especially if you write, teach, or build things
* reflect and introspect during Mercury retrograde.
Writers can use Mercury retrograde periods to revise and
edit, work on the second draft. You might discover
insights which eluded you when Mercury was direct (not
retrograde). Take it easy, check everything twice, and be
flexible.
"A time for every purpose under Heaven"
Above all, do not be frightened by Mercury retrograde. It
happens every four months, so rest assured you have
already survived it many times! All of nature's cycles
are useful, some are challenging, but none are inherently
bad.
