NEW INSTRUCTORS JOIN FALL SCHEDULE OF FILM CLASSES

TAOS, NM -- Legendary Hollywood production designer David Nichols and the Taos Talking Pictures’  Director of Programming Kelly Clement are joining the ranks of instructors for the Taos Filmmakers Initiative, according to TFI president and founder James Lujan.  Beginning in September, Nichols will teach a course in Production Design while Clement will offer a course in Film Genre: The Science Fiction Film.

This latest development for the nonprofit Taos Filmmakers Initiative comes a month after its announcement that it has formed an association with the Taos branch of the University of New Mexico which will enable students enrolled at UNM-Taos to receive credit for taking courses offered by TFI.  TFI begins its fourth year of film classes this fall.

“TFI is very fortunate and privileged to be working with instructors the caliber of David and Kelly,” says Lujan.  “These are two gentlemen with very impressive credentials and a lot of professional experience in the film industry.  There’s a lot to be learned from them.”

Nichols got his start working as a production designer on low-budget films for Roger Corman’s B-movie factory in the 60s.  He eventually worked his way up the ladder, contributing his talents to such classic films as “Rocky,” “Mean Streats” and “Taxi Driver,” to more recent productions including “Groundhog Day” and “Mr. Holland’s Opus.”

Clement, in addition to his duties as TTP’s Director of Programming for nearly a decade, is an award-winning filmmaker and has taught for UNM before as a Professor of Film Studies.

The Production Design and Film Genre courses will be two of several courses on TFI’s schedule for Fall 2003.  In addition, Lujan will be teaching the Filmmakers Collaborative, a course in basic digital film production, as well as a class in Documentary/Experimental Filmmaking.  Other offerings include Film Producing, taught by TFI Vice-President D.A. Zivkovich and Acting for Film taught by actress Cynthia Straus.  TFI will also offer after school programs for children and teens.

For more information or to sign up for any of these classes, contact D.A. Zivkovich at 758-7859.

Resolution Opposing Modern Pit Facility

The Santa Fe City Council recently passed a resolution opposing the construction and operation of a Modern Pit Facility (MPF) at Los Alamos National Laboratory or anywhere.

Furthermore, the Councilors directed the city clerk to inform the New Mexico Congressional delegation, Governor Richardson and the responsible agencies of their objections.  The MPF could produce as many as 500 new nuclear weapons per year.

The resolution, introduced by Councilor Matthew Ortiz and supported by Councilors Bushee, Heldemeyer, Coss, Chávez and Wurzburger, states, “The governing body of the city of Santa Fe does not support the creation of further health and environmental hazards related to nuclear weapons for the citizens of northern New Mexico.”

Following the vote, Councilor Ortiz said, “I hope that the resolution we passed opposing the MPF sends a strong signal to our Washington delegation and to the Department of Energy that northern New Mexico does not want and will resist any expansion of the nuclear program in our backyards.”

This has been a CCNS News Update.  For more information about these or other nuclear safety issues please call the CCNS Radioactive Hotline at 1-800-456-8863 or download the audio version of the Update from our web page at www.nuclearactive.org.

Call Girl
2001 Honorable Mention
(25 April 2001, New York) "Why don't you come back and meet me here?" He thought she was calling to arrange a hot date, but he was wrong. The 29-year-old rapist had not only assaulted his victim, but also stolen $70 and her cell phone after poking her in the neck with a pair of tweezers he took from her purse..

As soon as he left her apartment she summoned help, and police encouraged her to assist in the capture of the rapist. Under their watchful eye, she called him on her own cell phone and courageously coaxed him back to her building.

The woman was an excellent actress. Her attacker arrived for his "date" an hour later with a 40-ounce bottle of Heineken in his hand and her panties and cell phone tucked in his pocket. Police took the man, trailing a long criminal record, into custody.

His victim really did a number on him!
