Roosevelt vs. Bush -- What a Difference Dismantling America's Conservation Legacy ROOSEVELT "It is vandalism wantonly to destroy or to permit the destruction of what is beautiful in nature, whether it be a cliff, a forest, or a species of mammal or bird. Here in the United States we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and dumping-grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy forests, and exterminate fishes, birds and mammals. But at last it looks as if our people were awakening. ...The natural resources of our country are in danger of exhaustion if we permit the old wasteful methods of exploiting them longer to continue." President Teddy Roosevelt (on the creation of the National Monument System, pictured with John Muir.) BUSH "Where the land is so widespread, they just encompass as much as possible. And the integral part of the, the precious part, so to speak, I guess all land is precious, but the part that the people uniformly would not want to spoil, will not be despoiled. But there are parts of the monument lands where we can explore without affecting the overall environment." President George W. Bush (promoting the opening of National Monuments to Oil and Gas Exploration, pictured with tree stump.) In less than three years, in what the New York Times has called a, "revolution in public policy deeply at odds with a long bipartisan tradition of environmental stewardship" this unholy cabal in the Bush Administration has launched initiatives to weaken, undermine, eradicate or overturn every single legislative and regulatory protection for our public lands, including the National Forest Management Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Endangered Species Act. In addition to eviscerating the environmental standards under which these lands are managed, the Bush Administration has launched aggressive attacks on provisions that mandate public oversight of the management of these public lands. These actions, taken together, result in a 180 degree reversal from Roosevelt's policies of protecting these lands, "for the greatest good for the greatest number over the long run", and instead turn them back into the hands of the very industries from which Roosevelt strove so vigilantly to protect them.
